SCAN COIN chooses ETL

SCAN COIN's subsidiary in the US announced that its customers were requesting third-party testing of the company's products. ETL certification verifies that the products meet all applicable requirements.

The Swedish company SCAN COIN works with money, literally. The company develops and sells coin and currency counters, cash handling equipment and self-service coin deposit units all over the world.

Several years ago, commerce authorities in Kenya began to require third-party tests for electrical safety. At the same time, SCAN COIN’s US subsidiary raised the issue that its products should be independently tested against UL standards.

"This led to a desire on our part to review the entire certification process," says Lars Göran Welin, divisional manager for affiliated products at SCAN COIN. "What do we need to gain access to all global markets? How do we meet requirements of our customers in the US?"

ETL certification

SCAN COIN had previously worked with Intertek for RoHS testing, therefore reinitiating  contact with the company was a natural solution. Today, SCAN COIN’s products exported to America carry the ETL Listed Mark.

"At first we were a little unsure if ETL carried the same weight in the USA as other certifications, and unsure if it would be accepted by our customers,” added Mr. Welin. “But after learning more we were convinced."

SCAN COIN strives to ensure that all of its products are approved for use around the world, and many of them are certified for everything from ETL, CB and CE to RoHS and FCC.

"We simply wanted to go through the entire product and receive independent certification that it meets all the requirements. For us, it’s partly a marketing issue. We are not saying our product is safe, Intertek is."

Being global is an advantage

For SCAN COIN, it is important to have good communication with a testing partner. SCAN COIN's personnel, with assistance from Intertek's experts, have increased their competency in electrical safety and interpretation of standards.

According to Mr. Welin, "Intertek is located at all of the locations in Asia where we have production and we have visited their offices in both Taipei and Shanghai. Wherever we are in the world, we get the same high standard of assistance."

For a company with worldwide operations and sales such as SCAN COIN, Intertek's global presence is a major advantage.
